A HISTORIC ENCOUNTER

For the first time in French League (LFP) history, an official competition will be presented outside of France. The FC Girondins de Bordeaux, the French Ligue 1 season champion, and the En Avant Guingamp, the French Cup winner will match up in the 14th edition of the Champions Trophy.

Bordeaux (24-6-8) ended the championship with 80 points, three points ahead of Marseille. The team of head coach Laurent Blanc registered a sixth title as French Champion. Bordeaux, led by Yoann Gourcuff, will be defending its title after defeating last year Lyon on penalties.

Guingamp, a French second division club (Ligue 2) Guingamp, which represented a small town of less than 10,000 people, clinched a spot in this game by winning the French Cup, May 9, after signing a 2-1 win in the final against Rennes, in front of 80,056 spectators at the Stade de France. Previously, the team had also beat Le Mans and Toulouse. For the first time since 1959, a second division club wins the cup.

"We are proud to be presenting at home the Champions Trophy," said Impact President Joey Saputo. "For a long time, we wanted to host a high profile international game in Montreal, which offers a fantastic market for international level soccer games. In the past months, the Impact had made intensive and sustained efforts to hold this unprecedented event in Quebec and we are very happy with the outcome."

The 14th edition of the Champions Trophy will feature the two top French clubs. French second division club (Ligue 2) Guingamp clinched a spot in this game by winning the French Cup, May 9, after signing a 2-1 victory in the finals against Rennes, in front of 80,056 spectators at the Stade de France. It is the first time since 1959 that a second division club wins the cup.

"This is a first for Quebec soccer. It will be an exceptional event that will make history," said Executive Vice President of the Montreal Impact Richard Legendre. "Soccer fans will get the opportunity to see high level soccer in a competitive international setting. We are expecting a considerable crowd and this is why we have chosen the Olympic Stadium to hold this event. Keeping in line with our organization's tradition, tickets will once again be affordable."
