CAROLINA 1 IMPACT 4

POST-GAME REPORT: August 1, 2007

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact (8-4-7) registered a 4-1 win against the Carolina RailHawks (4-9-7), Wednesday, in front of 11,321 spectators at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. Team captain Mauro Biello (23rd), defender Mauricio Vincello (45th), forward Charles Gbeke (62nd) and midfielder David Testo (87th) scored for the Impact. Defender Chad Dombrowski (32nd) scored the lone goal for the Carolina RailHawks.

It was a first goal this season for Biello and Vincello, while newcomers Joey Gjertsen (two assists), David Testo (one goal) and Roberto Brown (one assist) all participated in the score.

It was the first time the Impact scored four goals at home since June 14, 2006, when Montreal beat the Atlanta Silverbacks 4-1.

“The win gives a lot of confidence and energy to the team for the next games,” said Montreal Impact head coach Nick De Santis. “Joey Gjertsen did a lot on the field and he created many scoring chances. It’s a great win for team morale and for the three points we get.”

“It feels good to score four goals,” said team captain Mauro Biello.” Lately, we’ve made a lot of changes and it helped us offensively. We are playing another important game Sunday and I hope that we will play the same way.”

“It’s refreshing because it’s like a new start to the season,” said newcomer David Testo. “If we keep playing like this, good things will happen. It’s good to win and also to score a lot of goals and create many chances too. At first, I only wanted to come into the game but the ball came to me and I scored on a good break.”

Defender Nevio Pizzolitto, who came into the game in the 72nd minute, was playing his first game of the season, after having missed the first 18 games due to a knee injury.

Impact goalkeeper Andrew Weber, who played a fourth straight game, signed his third victory of the season. He has now tied goalkeeper Paul Shepherd in fifth place for the most games played, with 22.

With the win, the Impact moved up to third place in the United Soccer League First Division standings with 31 points, six points behind first place, held by the Portland Timbers.

Both teams will meet for the fourth and last time on August 26, at SAS Park, in Cary, North Carolina.

The Montreal Impact will play its next game against the Rochester Raging Rhinos, this Sunday, August 5, at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, at 4 pm (Radio-Canada, Sirius, CJAD 800, USLlive.com).

GOALS
23 rd minute – Captain Mauro Biello received a short back pass from forward Joey Gjertsen, then fired a strong 30-yard shot in the upper left corner of the net that beat goalkeeper Chris McClellan.

32nd minute – Defender Chad Dombrowski deflected midfielder Kupono Low’s corner kick with a header. Dombrowski then redirected the ball on the ground and the rebound beat Impact goalkeeper Andrew Weber at the top of the net.

45th minute – Defender Mauricio Vincello accepted Antonio Ribeiro’s short pass, dribbled on a short distance, and fired a hard shot from 30-yards out just beneath the crossbar.

62nd minute – Posted in the penalty box, Impact forward Charles Gbeke pivoted and fired a high shot, beating McClellan to his right.

87th minute – Following a pass by Roberto Brown, David Testo went in alone on a breakaway and beat goalkeeper Chris McClellan with a low shot, on the left side of the net.

HIGHLIGHTS
9th minute – After a long pass behind the RailHawks defense, Impact newcomer Joey Gjertsen went in alone in front of goalkeeper Chris McClellan. Gjertsen attempted two shots, but was stopped by McClellan, who partially blocked the ball, diving to his feet.

30th minute – Midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo, left alone by the RailHawks defense, centered the ball towards forward Charles Gbeke, who deflected the ball with a header, but defender Chad Dombrowski stopped the ball with his head on the goal line.

45th minute – With Impact goalkeeper Andrew Weber out of position, Santiago Fusiller headed the ball into an open net, but defender Gabriel Gervais blocked the shot with a header.

77th minute – After falling in the penalty box, captain Mauro Biello kept possession of the ball and took a shot without warning that hit the crossbar.
