SEATTLE 0 IMPACT 2
MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact shut out the Seattle Sounders 2-0 in their 14th home opener, to remain undefeated this season (3-0-2), in front of 10,143 spectators at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.
Matthew Palleschi (12th minute) and Martin Fabro (54th) scored the Impact goals. For both players, it was their second goal of the season. "We aimed at blocking the midfield, putting the opponent under pressure, and we succeeded, said Impact head coach Nick De Santis. We recovered many balls in their offensive third, which is why we were so dangerous. We had good pressure and the discipline on the defensive side was there. The counterattack was very close to their net. If we would have been cleaner with our feet at the beginning, we could have had more scoring opportunities. The mentality was positive and we managed the match well." Goalkeeper Matt Jordan, who is still undefeated this season, recorded his second shutout of the season, stopping 10 shots from the Sounders. "Seattle had a lot of restarts, Matt (Jordan) had to be sharp and direct a lot of traffic, even if he did not execute too many saves, said defender Gabriel Gervais. He’s very vocal which helps us. This year, we are showing an offensive face, as we had said, and we created lots of chances today. Arango is fitting right in, Simon (Gatti) was clean with his feet and very quick. I absolutely like how everybody is fitting in and until other players come back, we will be in good shape. Our performance was flawless today." On the first goal, midfielder Mauro Biello dribbled on the right wing, spun around and then centered the ball to the far post to Palleschi who deflected the ball with a header over Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander. On the second goal, Argentinean midfielder Martin Fabro redirected a corner kick from Leonardo Di Lorenzo with a crisp header, beating Eylander on his right. Captain Mauro Biello had to leave the game at the 40th minute due to a pulled hamstring on his right leg. He was replaced by midfielder Zé Roberto. The Impact dominated the Sounders 18-10 in shots. Both teams will square off again in Seattle on June 23. The Impact will play its next five games at home, beginning with the Miami FC on Friday, May 25 (8 pm, CJAD 800, Télévision de Radio-Canada, FSW, Sirius, USLlive.com).
